Nightjar

 by Priscilla Atkins

Late-summer,
first time
           in years
I turn off the fan.
           Listen
gorgeous and eerie and
far:
           two-toned,
low
then highhhhhhh
            lasso
boomerang.
                Five seconds . . .
ten. Long enough to
question.
Then,
          the strange––
again. Two a.m.
                Lungs swallow
a fist. Terror. Opened
          beauty: opened––
blind.
