Sleeping under one

by Terry Mulert

I chase you into the breathing
dust of planets
the birds sit in the sky
with no place
but the sun
to call home

kite tails are caught
in the power lines
yo yo’s
and chewing gum
in our pockets

I tear my shirt off
under the flickering streetlights
pumping wildly
into a bicycle sweat

I will reach you before
you sleep before
you dream of me.
